1925. Eisenstein's account of the mutiny aboard the Potemkin, built less as a story than as a demonstration of what cutting can do to an audience. He shot the Odessa Steps sequence over weeks, and it is probably the most quoted few minutes in cinema: the pram, the broken glasses, the soldiers coming down in rhythm. Hitchcock, De Palma and Gilliam have all lifted from it openly.
The massacre as staged never actually happened on those steps, which has not stopped it being remembered as history. The film was banned outright in Britain for years and in several other countries as well, and the bans did more for its reputation than any review. This is a Soviet cinema sheet for the Uran picture house on Sretenka Street in Moscow, the prow coming straight at you with 1905 stacked behind it in red.
