Who is in Garbage and when did they form?
Garbage formed in 1993 in Madison, Wisconsin, with Shirley Manson on lead vocals, Butch Vig on drums, Duke Erikson on guitar, bass, and keyboards, and Steve Marker on guitar and keyboards. The four-member lineup has stayed unchanged since the start.
Where did the name Garbage come from?
Butch Vig reportedly wrote in his studio journal, “I hope that all this garbage will become something beautiful!” and the name stuck.
How did Shirley Manson end up in the band?
Steve Marker spotted Manson’s earlier band Angelfish on MTV’s 120 Minutes and tracked her down. She later called their first audition “a disaster,” but she reconnected with the band and moved from Edinburgh to Madison to record the debut.
Had Shirley Manson even heard of Butch Vig before joining?
Reportedly she did not recognize Vig’s name at first and was told to check the credits on Nevermind, the Nirvana album Vig had produced.
Did the band members know each other before Garbage?
Yes. Erikson and Vig had played together in bands including Spooner and Fire Town, and Marker worked as a sound engineer on Fire Town. Vig and Marker founded Smart Studios in Madison in 1983, which is where Manson later auditioned.

They went on an 18-month hiatus after 2005’s Bleed Like Me, with Manson admitting, “We were barely even speaking.” They reunited in 2011.
