State shirts belong to a specific American tradition. Between 1936 and 1943 the Federal Art Project printed around two thousand poster designs promoting parks, travel and public works, and only a few hundred survive at all. That flat-colour, bold-type style is the one people still recognise on a wall or a shirt, and it is the tradition most of these designs are working in.
This collection gathers state and regional destination t shirts — state shapes and outlines, landmarks, lakes and coastlines, and the towns worth naming. Arizona, California, Colorado, Maine, Texas and Utah are all here, with more added as the art comes in. These are souvenir designs in the honest sense: the place is the subject, not the backdrop to somebody else's story.
