Tonka

Tonka started in 1947 in Mound, Minnesota, at a company originally set up to make garden tools. It switched to steel toy trucks, and took its name from neighbouring Lake Minnetonka — in the Dakota language the word means great, or big.

The trucks were pressed steel rather than plastic, which is why so many still work decades later after being left out in the yard. The Mighty Dump Truck, introduced in 1964, is the one most people picture. Hasbro acquired the brand in 1991.
