The Tudors

Showtime played the reign of Henry VIII as a political thriller with very good clothes. Created by Michael Hirst, who went on to make Vikings, The Tudors ran four seasons on the wives, the break with Rome, and a court where falling out of favour was fatal. Jonathan Rhys Meyers was cast deliberately against the familiar Holbein portrait, to play Henry young and dangerous rather than heavy and old.
