Who are The Postal Service?
They are an American electronic band formed in 2001 in Seattle, made up of Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie, producer Jimmy Tamborello of Dntel, and vocalist Jenny Lewis.
How did the band get started?
Gibbard and Tamborello first worked together when Gibbard sang on the track “(This Is) The Dream of Evan and Chan” from Tamborello’s Dntel album Life Is Full of Possibilities, and that collaboration led them to keep making music together.
Where did the name The Postal Service come from?
The two members made the music by mailing recordings back and forth, with Tamborello sending instrumentals and Gibbard adding vocals and sending them back. Ironically, they reportedly used FedEx or UPS rather than the actual USPS.
Did the real Postal Service ever have a problem with the name?
Yes. In August 2003 the U.S. Postal Service sent a cease-and-desist letter over trademark concerns, but the two sides reached a licensing agreement letting the band keep the name.
So the band actually worked with the USPS?
They did. As part of the deal the band agreed to help promote the USPS and reportedly performed at the Postal Service’s 2004 National Executive Conference in Washington, D.C.
