The Smurfs

Belgian cartoonist Peyo introduced the Smurfs on October 23, 1958, as side characters in a Johan and Peewit story in Spirou magazine. They took over. Hanna-Barbera's animated series ran on NBC from 1981 to 1989 and made Papa Smurf, Smurfette and Gargamel household names in the United States.
