Simon launched at Studio 54. Milton Bradley threw a party at the nightclub in 1978 to introduce a flat black disc with four coloured panels that plays a sequence and asks you to repeat it, adding one step each round until you fail.

It was designed by Ralph Baer, who had already invented home video gaming with the Magnavox Odyssey, and the four tones are deliberately musical — they form a chord, so a losing run still sounds like something.
