Who started Underoath and when?
Underoath was founded on November 30, 1997, by vocalist Dallas Taylor and guitarist Luke Morton in Ocala, Florida. The band later relocated to Tampa.
Where does the name Underoath come from?
Guitarist Luke Morton came up with the name, reportedly taking it from somewhere in the Bible.
What kind of music do they play?
They started as a Christian metalcore band and evolved through metalcore, post-hardcore, screamo, and emo. Loudwire later named them part of modern metalcore’s Big Four alongside Bring Me the Horizon, Architects, and Parkway Drive.
Is anyone from the original lineup still in the band?
Drummer and clean vocalist Aaron Gillespie is the sole original member still active. He left in April 2010 but reunited with the band in 2015.
When did Spencer Chamberlain become the singer?
Spencer Chamberlain replaced original vocalist Dallas Taylor as lead vocalist in October 2003.

Their debut, Act of Depression, came out in 1999 on Takehold Records and sold over 2,000 copies. The follow-up, Cries of the Past (2000), was a five-song, 40-minute record.

Yes. They announced they were disbanding on October 2, 2012, and played their final show on January 26, 2013. They reunited on August 17, 2015.
Have they been nominated for a Grammy?
Once. Their 2018 single On My Teeth was nominated for Best Metal Performance, losing to High on Fire’s Electric Messiah.
Is it true Define the Great Line leaked before release?
Reportedly, an unfinished version of Define the Great Line (2006) leaked onto BitTorrent before its official release.
Did an injury ever affect their touring?
Reportedly, drummer Aaron Gillespie needed emergency hand surgery during 2007 touring, and the band continued with a substitute drummer.
Are they still considered a Christian band?
They gradually distanced themselves from the label, and by 2018’s Erase Me they had publicly moved away from their earlier Christian approach.
Did the original singer ever come back?
In December 2024, original vocalist Dallas Taylor reunited onstage with the current members to perform When the Sun Sleeps.
Have they put out new music recently?
Yes. They released The Place After This One on March 28, 2025, their tenth studio album, and have hinted at another record in 2027.
