Starfleet Academy

Ex Astris, Scientia. From the stars, knowledge. Starfleet Academy sits in San Francisco below the Golden Gate, was founded in 2161 alongside the Federation itself, and has turned out every captain the franchise has ever followed. The year printed on an Academy shirt is a graduating class, not decoration: 2254 is Kirk, 2327 is Picard, 2354 is Sisko.

The Academy is also where Starfleet keeps its most famous exam. The Kobayashi Maru is built to be unwinnable, designed to show a cadet how they behave when there is no good option left. Kirk reprogrammed it, beat it, and was given a commendation for original thinking rather than a reprimand, which tells you something about the institution.

It is a real campus, and the merchandise reads like one. Parrises Squares is the Academy's full-contact sport, played across tiered platforms. The teams are the Fighting Phoenix. There is a marathon, a tri-dimensional chess championship, a European swordsmanship club, and a library named for Zefram Cochrane, who flew the first human warp flight. Red Squadron drew from the top of the class. The departments — Sciences, Astrophysics, Starfleet Medical — each have their own seal.

Picard left with a flair for trouble and came back years later with an artificial heart after losing a bar fight with three Nausicaans. Nog talked his way in as the first Ferengi ever to attend.
