Seventy thousand light years from home, with a seventy-five year trip ahead of them. Voyager threw out the premise that made Star Trek comfortable: no Starfleet, no reinforcements, no going back for supplies.

Kate Mulgrew played Kathryn Janeway, the first woman to lead a Star Trek series, commanding a crew stitched together from her own officers and the Maquis insurgents she had been sent to arrest. The Doctor, a hologram who was never meant to be switched on for more than a few minutes, became one of the best characters in the franchise. Seven of Nine arrived in season four as a Borg being slowly returned to herself, and reshaped the show around her.
