The films are where Star Trek learned to break your heart. The Motion Picture was slow and strange and enormous. Then came The Wrath of Khan, directed by Nicholas Meyer, which gave the franchise a villain with a grudge, a no-win scenario and a death scene people still cannot discuss calmly.
The Voyage Home sent the crew to 1986 San Francisco to collect two humpback whales and became the most successful of the original-cast films by being, essentially, a comedy. First Contact took the Next Generation crew and the Borg and made the best film of that era. Fans have argued about the even-numbered-films theory for forty years without settling it.
