Questions

How fast did Stallone write Rocky?
In about three and a half days, right after watching the Muhammad Ali vs Chuck Wepner fight in March 1975.
Did Stallone turn down big money to star?
Yes. He rejected a six-figure offer for the script because he insisted on playing Rocky himself, and said he would never have forgiven himself if it succeeded with someone else.
What was the budget, and how did it do?
About 1 million dollars, and it returned over 11,000 percent, one of the most profitable films ever made.
Are Stallone’s real family in the movie?
Yes. To save money his father rang the bell between rounds, his brother Frank sang on a street corner, and his first wife was the still photographer.
Were those real sides of beef?
Yes. Rocky’s meat-locker training used real hanging beef as punching bags.
Did Stallone really sell his dog?
Reportedly. A broke Stallone is said to have sold his dog Butkus and bought him back after the sale, and the dog appears in the film.
How was the running scene filmed so smoothly?
With Garrett Brown’s newly invented Steadicam, which glided alongside Rocky during training and the museum-steps run. Rocky was one of the first films to use it.
How was Apollo Creed cast?
Real boxer Ken Norton was first sought but pulled out, so the role went to Carl Weathers, who played Apollo across the series.
How did Talia Shire get cast as Adrian?
After Carrie Snodgress left over a money dispute, Susan Sarandon was deemed too pretty and Cher too expensive, and Talia Shire’s audition won her the part.
What’s the story behind Rocky’s shorts?
A prop mistake gave him red shorts with a white stripe instead of the reverse. Rather than reshoot, they wrote the promoter’s line that it doesn’t really matter, does it?
Did the actors get hurt in the final fight?
Yes. Stallone suffered bruised ribs and Weathers a damaged nose, the opposite of their characters’ injuries.
How did Rocky do at the Oscars?
Ten nominations and three wins: Best Picture, Best Director for John G. Avildsen, and Best Film Editing.
Are the Rocky Steps real?
Yes, the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. A Rocky statue was commissioned in 1982 and now stands permanently beside them, and fans run the steps daily.
What happened with the ’Gonna Fly Now’ theme?
It hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for a week in July 1977 and later landed 58th on AFI’s list of top movie songs.
