He was one of Mexico’s most beloved singer-songwriters, born Alberto Aguilera Valadez on January 7, 1950, in Parácuaro, Michoacán. Over a 45 year career he became an icon of ranchera, mariachi, and Latin pop.
Where did the name Juan Gabriel come from?
He picked it when he launched his career in the early 1970s. The Juan reportedly honored his teacher Juan Contreras, and the Gabriel honored his father.
How did he get his first record deal?
After years of rejection in Mexico City, he was arrested on a robbery charge in 1971 and spent 18 months in Lecumberri Prison. There he composed songs that caught a warden’s attention, which reportedly led to an introduction that helped him land an RCA contract.

His 1971 debut album El Alma Joven featured No Tengo Dinero, which became his breakthrough single and first chart success.
