Who was Juan Gabriel?
He was one of Mexico’s most beloved singer-songwriters, born Alberto Aguilera Valadez on January 7, 1950, in Parácuaro, Michoacán. Over a 45 year career he became an icon of ranchera, mariachi, and Latin pop.
Where did the name Juan Gabriel come from?
He picked it when he launched his career in the early 1970s. The Juan reportedly honored his teacher Juan Contreras, and the Gabriel honored his father.

Yes. In 1987 he founded Semjase, an orphanage in Ciudad Juárez for children ages 6 to 12, and he reportedly performed 10 to 12 benefit concerts a year for children’s homes.
When did Juan Gabriel die?
He died August 28, 2016, in Santa Monica, California, reportedly from a heart attack at age 66. His ashes were returned to his home in Ciudad Juárez, and a TV series about his life ended the same day he died.
