Who is George Clinton?
He is the American musician known as the Godfather of Funk, born July 22, 1941, in Kannapolis, North Carolina, and raised in Plainfield, New Jersey. He masterminded the Parliament-Funkadelic collective that dominated funk in the 1970s.
How did he get his start in music?
As a teenager he formed a doo-wop group called The Parliaments, inspired by Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers. He worked out of a barbershop on Plainfield Avenue where he straightened hair and networked with local singers.
What was his first hit?
The Parliaments scored their first major hit with "(I Wanna) Testify" in 1967. He had also worked as a staff songwriter for Motown in the 1960s.
What is the difference between Parliament and Funkadelic?
They were two sides of the same collective of musicians that Clinton led, often called P-Funk. Together the Parliament-Funkadelic groups produced more than 40 R&B hit singles, including three number ones, and three platinum albums.

The Mothership was Parliament’s legendary stage centerpiece, a theatrical spaceship that captured Clinton’s Afrofuturistic vision. It became synonymous with the P-Funk live spectacle.
