Who invented Dubble Bubble?
It was created in 1928 by Walter Diemer, an accountant at Philadelphia’s Fleer Chewing Gum Company, while he was experimenting with gum recipes.
Was it really the first bubble gum?
Yes, Dubble Bubble was the first commercially sold bubble gum. Diemer’s formula was less sticky than regular chewing gum, which let it form bubbles easily.
Why is bubble gum pink?
Reportedly it was an accident. The only food coloring available at the factory was pink, so Diemer had no choice but to use it, and pink became the worldwide standard for bubble gum.
How did the first batch sell?
Diemer individually wrapped 100 pieces using a salt water taffy machine and sold them for a penny each at a local candy store. They reportedly sold out in a single day.
How much did it make in its first year?
First-year sales surpassed $1.5 million.
How did they teach people to blow bubbles?
To promote the product, Diemer himself reportedly taught salespeople how to blow bubbles so they could demonstrate the technique to customers.
Who is Pud, the character on the wrapper?
Pud was the brand’s mascot, introduced in 1950. He was originally much more rotund than the slimmed-down version seen in the 1960s.
