Questions

Who made Double Dragon and when did it come out?
Technos Japan created Double Dragon in 1987, with development led by Yoshihisa Kishimoto. It started life as an arcade game before spreading to home consoles.
Where did the name Double Dragon come from?
The name references both the two-player co-op gameplay and Bruce Lee’s 1973 film Enter the Dragon.
Was Double Dragon connected to any earlier game?
Yes. It was a spiritual successor to Kishimoto’s 1986 beat ’em up Nekketsu Koha Kunio-kun, which was released in the West as Renegade.
Who are the two heroes?
Brothers Billy and Jimmy Lee, who fight through the Black Warriors gang to rescue Marian. The names Billy and Jimmy Lee were given to the protagonists in the Famicom and NES port.
What was so special about the gameplay?
It introduced a continuous side-scrolling world across four stages with cooperative two-player action, weapon pickups, and cutscenes, helping define the beat ’em up genre.
Is it true the two players have to fight each other?
Reportedly yes. If both players beat the game together, they are forced to fight each other over Marian at the end.
How well did Double Dragon do in arcades?
It was reportedly Japan’s third highest-grossing table arcade game of 1987 and America’s highest-grossing dedicated arcade game for 1988 and 1989.
How many arcade cabinets did it sell?
Taito reportedly sold over 10,000 arcade cabinets in Japan, with over 80% of U.S. operators adopting the game.
Did the NES version change the story?
Yes. Tradewest’s NES port, released in June 1988, made Jimmy the antagonist and leader of the Black Warriors instead of Billy’s ally.
Why did the NES version feel different to play?
The NES port swapped the arcade’s co-op for alternating play, could only show two identical enemies on screen at once, and lacked the arcade’s full weapon variety.
Who composed the music?
Kazunaka Yamane created the soundtrack. An arranged album called Original Sound of Double Dragon was released on February 21, 1988, on Apollon Records.
Did Double Dragon win any awards?
Electronic Gaming Monthly named it Game of the Year for 1988, and it is credited with ushering in a golden age for the beat ’em up genre.
