Where and when did Crowded House form?
They formed in Melbourne, Australia in 1985. Founding members were Neil Finn on vocals and guitar, Paul Hester on drums, and Nick Seymour on bass.
How did the band get its name?
They were originally called The Mullanes, but Capitol Records asked for a change. The name Crowded House reportedly came from the lack of space at the small Hollywood Hills house the band shared while recording their debut album.
How did the members first come together?
Neil Finn and Paul Hester had both been in Split Enz, and decided to form a new band during the first Split Enz farewell tour, Enz with a Bang, in late 1984. Nick Seymour reportedly approached Finn at the afterparty for the Melbourne show and asked if he could audition.
What is their most famous song?
Don’t Dream It’s Over, released in October 1986. It reached number 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 in Canada.
What were their other big hits?
Something So Strong reached the global Top 10, Better Be Home Soon peaked at number 2 in Australia and New Zealand, and Weather with You hit number 7 in the UK in early 1992.
How well did their debut album do?
The self-titled debut reached number 1 in Australia in 1987 and number 12 in the US. As of 2021 the band had sold over 15 million albums worldwide.
What was the famous farewell concert?
On 24 November 1996 they played Farewell to the World on the steps of the Sydney Opera House, drawing an estimated 120,000 to 250,000 people, one of Australia’s largest live audiences ever. The show raised funds for the Sydney Children’s Hospital.
What happened to drummer Paul Hester?
Hester died by suicide on 26 March 2005 at age 46. He had reportedly fought a long battle with depression.
Did the band ever reunite?
Yes. They reunited in 2006 with new drummer Matt Sherrod, releasing Time on Earth in 2007 and Intriguer in 2010.
Who is in the band now?
A 2020 lineup added keyboardist Mitchell Froom along with Neil Finn’s sons Liam Finn and Elroy Finn. They released Dreamers Are Waiting in 2021 and Gravity Stairs in 2024.
