He was born William Michael Albert Broad on November 30, 1955, in Stanmore, Middlesex, England. His mother was from Cork, Ireland, and his father was from Birmingham.

It came from a chemistry teacher, Bill Price, who reportedly wrote ’idle’ on his school report card. Idol first wanted to be ’Billy Idle’ but worried it looked too much like Monty Python’s Eric Idle, so he went with ’Idol’ instead.
