Is it true Reeves and Winter originally auditioned for the opposite roles?
That is a persistent myth. Winter explained the confusion came from the fact that the characters are so similar that even he and Reeves sometimes mixed them up.
Who was almost cast as Rufus instead of George Carlin?
Producers reportedly wanted Eddie Van Halen but could not afford him. They also considered Ringo Starr, Roger Daltrey, and Sean Connery before discovering Carlin through producers who had just finished another film with him.

No. Matheson said all of them were clueless and knew nothing about Doctor Who. The original script even used a 1969 Chevrolet van, but producers scrapped it as too similar to Back to the Future’s DeLorean.

The spec script was titled Bill & Ted’s Time Van. Early drafts also featured Adolf Hitler and a caveman discovering fire before the historical lineup was changed.
Did they really film inside a spinning phone booth?
Yes. The Circuits of Time sequences were filmed with multiple people inside a phone booth on a gimbal in front of a green screen. Reeves described it as a death ride canoe from the worst carny ride you have ever been on.
Is there a deleted scene fans never got to see?
An elaborate choreographed opening dance number with Bill and Ted air-guitaring to school was filmed but cut. Alex Winter reportedly found stills from it on an old hard drive in February 2020, and the initial cut ran 2 hours and 25 minutes.
Where was the movie filmed?
Most of it was shot in the Phoenix and Tempe, Arizona area, including Coronado High School in Scottsdale and Phoenix Metrocenter mall. The Evil Duke’s castle scenes were filmed at Odescalchi Castle in Italy.
Were the water park extras real park guests?
Reportedly yes. The budget did not allow producers to close the parks, so all the background swimmers on those filming days were actual paying customers.

Made on roughly a $10 million budget, it grossed about $40.4 million domestically. That success came even though distributor De Laurentiis Entertainment Group filed for bankruptcy during post-production.
