Betty Boop

Betty Boop first appeared in August 1930, in a Fleischer Studios short called Dizzy Dishes, and she was headlining her own cartoons within two years. She did not start out human — the original character was drawn as a dog, and across the next two years the floppy ears were redrawn into hoop earrings and the snout into a button nose. Cab Calloway performed for several of the shorts and was rotoscoped into them, so the ghost in Minnie the Moocher moves with his actual dance steps. The Hays Code caught up with the series in 1934 and the studio was made to lengthen her hemline; the theatrical run ended in 1939 after more than a hundred cartoons.
