Las Vegas

Las Vegas was incorporated in 1911 and spent its first decades as a railroad town. The part everyone pictures is not even in the city — most of the Strip sits in unincorporated Clark County, in a township called Paradise, which is why the city limits and the casinos have never quite matched up on a map.

The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign went up in 1959. Betty Willis designed it and never copyrighted it, saying it was her gift to the city, which is a large part of why it has been reproduced more or less everywhere ever since.
