Chevrolet was founded in 1911 by the Swiss racing driver Louis Chevrolet and William C. Durant, who had been pushed out of the company he built, General Motors, and used Chevrolet to buy his way back in. Nobody agrees where the bowtie came from: Durant said he tore it from wallpaper in a Paris hotel, his daughter said he sketched it at dinner, and another account traces it to a newspaper advertisement. The small-block V8 arrived in 1955 and stayed in production for decades, which is why so much of American hot-rodding is built around Chevrolet parts.
