BET, Black Entertainment Television, launched in 1980 as the first cable network created for Black American audiences. Founded by Robert L. Johnson, it grew into a home for music, comedy and culture, and shows like 106 & Park made it one of the most important launching pads for hip-hop and R&B artists of the 2000s.
