Who created Ace Attorney?
Shu Takumi created the series, writing and directing the first three games. It is developed and published by Capcom.
When did the first Ace Attorney game come out?
The first game launched on October 12, 2001, for the Game Boy Advance in Japan.
Who is the main character?
Defense attorney Phoenix Wright is the series’ protagonist, famous for shouting "Objection!" while pointing at witnesses.
What is the series called in Japan?
The original Japanese title is Gyakuten Saiban (逆転裁判), which means "Turnabout Trial."
How did Shu Takumi come up with the idea?
His boss Shinji Mikami reportedly gave him six months to make any game he wanted. Takumi first imagined a detective game with Phoenix as a private investigator, then realized finding and taking apart contradictions fit a courtroom better.
What inspired the story?
Takumi cited Japanese mystery author Edogawa Ranpo’s short story "The Psychological Test" as a major inspiration.
Why is the American version set in Los Angeles if the games are Japanese?
The original games take place in Japan, but Western versions are set in an alternate Los Angeles where, per the localization, anti-Japanese laws like the California Alien Land Law of 1913 were never passed. The French versions are set in Paris instead.
Where does Phoenix Wright’s name come from?
The character names are puns. Phoenix’s surname "Wright" references his Japanese name "Naruhodō," which means "I see."
How well has the series sold?
As of September 30, 2025, Ace Attorney had sold 14 million copies worldwide. By 2010 Capcom described it as one of their strongest intellectual properties.
Are there spinoff games?
Yes. The Ace Attorney Investigations games star prosecutor Miles Edgeworth, and The Great Ace Attorney is a prequel series set in late 19th-century England following Phoenix’s ancestor Ryunosuke Naruhodo.

Why did Shu Takumi originally want the story to end at the third game?
He felt it is important to know when to end a story and did not want the series to become a shadow of its former self, so he initially was not involved in continuing it past the trilogy.
