The Boys: Is the TV Show Better Than the Original Comic?

Few comic book adaptations have sparked as much debate as The Boys. Originally a graphic novel series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys was a no-holds-barred, ultraviolent, and deeply cynical take on the superhero genre. When Amazon Prime adapted it into a live-action show in 2019, many fans were skeptical about whether the series could capture the comic’s brutal, darkly comedic essence.

Four seasons in, The Boys TV series has not only been a massive hit but has arguably surpassed its source material in several ways. But is it better than the comic? That’s where things get interesting. Let’s break down the major elements of both versions to see which one comes out on top.

1. Story and Themes: Subtlety vs. Shock Value

At its core, The Boys is a deconstruction of superheroes, asking: What if superpowered individuals weren’t noble defenders of justice, but instead corrupt, self-absorbed, and above the law? Both the comic and the show explore this, but they do so in different ways.

The comic is extreme, often prioritizing shock value over nuance. Garth Ennis is known for his no-filter approach, and The Boys comics revel in depravity—excessive violence, graphic sexual content, and moments designed purely to push boundaries. While this makes for a unique reading experience, it also means the comic can sometimes feel juvenile, like it’s trying too hard to be edgy.

The show, on the other hand, maintains the same themes but refines them. It still delivers over-the-top gore and wild sex scenes, but it balances them with deeper social and political commentary. Issues like corporate corruption, media manipulation, and the dangers of unchecked power are explored in a way that feels more relevant and sophisticated than in the comics.

Winner: The TV Show

The show takes the comic’s core message and presents it in a way that’s both shocking and thought-provoking. It retains the chaos without feeling as gratuitous.

2. Characters: More Depth or More Insanity?

Billy Butcher

In both versions, Billy Butcher is a ruthless, charismatic antihero hellbent on destroying Homelander. The comic book version is even more sadistic—he has almost no moral boundaries, kills without hesitation, and even turns against his own team at one point. He’s fun to read but hard to root for.

The TV version, played by Karl Urban, is more complex. He’s still brutal, but we see more of his emotional struggles, particularly with his late wife Becca and his surrogate father relationship with Ryan. He’s given moments of vulnerability that make him a more compelling protagonist.

Hughie Campbell

Comic book Hughie, visually based on actor Simon Pegg, is a timid, often clueless everyman who stumbles his way into The Boys. While he does develop over time, he remains relatively static compared to the show’s version.

TV Hughie (Jack Quaid) is given more depth. His struggles with masculinity, self-worth, and morality make him a more engaging character. His relationship with Starlight is also more nuanced, providing a strong emotional core to the series.

Homelander

Perhaps the biggest difference between the two versions is in Homelander. The comic version is terrifying, but he’s also more predictable—he’s just a sadistic, monstrous villain with no real internal conflict. The show’s Homelander (Antony Starr), however, is one of the most chillingly complex villains in modern TV. He’s terrifying, yes, but also insecure, needy, and desperate for love and validation. This makes him far more unpredictable and engrossing to watch.

The Rest of The Seven

Characters like The Deep and A-Train, who were mostly one-dimensional in the comics, are given actual arcs in the show. The Deep, in particular, goes from a generic perverted side character to a deeply pathetic, manipulated figure whose story is often tragic and darkly comedic.

Winner: The TV Show

The show elevates almost every major character, making them more complex and engaging. While the comic’s versions are entertaining, the show’s depth and development win out.

3. World-Building: Satire vs. Social Commentary

The comic builds an interesting world, but it’s primarily there to serve as a playground for violence and debauchery. It mocks superhero culture, but it doesn’t go much deeper than that.

The show, however, fleshes out the world considerably. It explores the intersection of superheroes and corporate branding, PR spin, political influence, and even religious fanaticism. Vought International is a far more developed entity in the show, feeling like a disturbingly realistic mega-corporation. The show’s take on superhero celebrity culture, propaganda, and misinformation feels eerily relevant to the real world.

Winner: The TV Show

The show expands the world in ways that make it feel more immersive, timely, and unsettling.

4. Action and Gore: Which One Goes Further?

Make no mistake—the The Boys TV show is gory as hell. The exploding heads, laser eye massacres, and gruesome fights all push the boundaries of what mainstream television can show.

That said, the comic is even more extreme. Some of the most shocking moments in the series, such as Herogasm (a depraved superhero orgy event), are even more explicit in the comics. The comic’s action sequences are pure carnage, with bodies ripped apart in horrific detail.

While the show has toned some of this down (or at least made it more narratively justified), it still delivers plenty of jaw-dropping violence.

Winner: The Comic

If you want the absolute most unfiltered, over-the-top gore, the comic takes the crown.

5. Adaptation Choices: What the Show Changes for the Better

Not everything from the comics made it into the show, and for good reason.

In the comics, The Boys themselves all take Compound V early on, giving them superpowers. This makes them far more physically capable, but it also reduces the tension of them going up against superpowered foes. The show smartly delays this, making their fights with Supes much more desperate and strategic.

The show adds completely original characters and subplots, like Victoria Neuman, the secret Supe politician, which adds a new layer of intrigue.

Some of the comic’s most immature elements—like Hughie’s constant bad luck with bodily fluids—are toned down, making the show more digestible for mainstream audiences.

Winner: The TV Show

The changes made in the adaptation almost all work in the show’s favor, making for a more engaging and unpredictable experience.

Final Verdict: Is the TV Show Better?

While the comic is a groundbreaking and entertaining read, the The Boys TV show improves upon it in almost every way. It retains the dark humor, the action, and the shocking moments while adding more depth to its characters, expanding its world, and delivering sharper social commentary.

That’s not to say the comic isn’t worth reading—it absolutely is, especially if you’re a fan of ultra-violent satire. But if we’re talking about which version tells a better story, creates stronger characters, and delivers a more impactful experience, the TV show wins hands down.

Winner: The Boys TV Show

Now, with The Boys continuing to dominate pop culture and spin-offs like Gen V expanding the universe, the question remains: How much further can the show push the limits? If the past seasons are any indication, the best is still yet to come.

What makes Gal Gadot so perfect to play Wonder Woman? The first Wonder Woman film that Gal Gadot appeared in was Wonder Woman, which premiered in 2017. It was the first of the current crop of big-budget Wonder Woman films currently occupying much of the film cycle. Gal Gadot has played the role several times since then, and she’s always been a fan favorite. So that leads to the question, why? What makes Gal Gadot a huge fan favorite for playing Wonder Woman? Why does she drive sales of tickets and merchandise, like Wonder Woman t shirts? Why is that?

First of all, her background. Gal Gadot is Israeli. Now, Wonder Woman, in the comic strips, is meant to look Greek. You might be asking how it helps for an Israeli woman to play a Greek. The answer is that both Greeks and Israelis are broadly Mediterranean. And if you look at various countries around the mediterranean, such as Italy, Greece, Israel, and Turkey, you’ll find that there is a broadly Mediterranean “look” that is very common in those countries. So an actress with Mediterranean features is an excellent choice for the traditionally black-haired, Greek-appearing Diana, also known as Wonder Woman.

Second, her professional background. This is a big sell with Gal Gadot. Israel is a country with mandatory conscription, meaning that all Israelis, of both genders, must spend a certain amount of time in the Israeli military. Gal Gadot, being an Israeli, was conscripted. During her time in the IDF (Israeli Defense Force) she spent a great deal of time as a hand to hand combat trainer. So her time in the military was spent learning to fight hand to hand and teaching other people to do so as well. After she left the military, she spent additional time training in martial arts such as Brazilian jiu jitsu, kickboxing, and krav maga, which is an israeli martial art.

Third, her appearance. This one is kind of cheap. Gal Gadot’s virtues as an actress go far beyond her physical appearance. However, anybody who watches her movies has to agree on this point. There are many, many adjectives that I would use to describe Gal Gadot, and “ugly” is not one of them. She is a former model, and could clearly still be one if she wanted to. Part of Wonder Woman’s job is to look good while kicking butt, and Gal Gadot’s experience and appearance fit that role perfectly.

Gal Gadot is a perfect Wonder Woman, there can be no doubt about that. She’s so good for the role that it almost raises a succession problem: once she stops, who can possibly play Wonder Woman? It’s as bad as finding another Saruman after Christopher Lee or another James Bond after Sean Connery. And yes, that second one does count, despite all the other Bond actors. There have been plenty of other Bond actors, but Sean Connery was the only Bond who was really James Bond, and we all know that.

There are old games, there are classic games, and then there are ancient games. I’m talking about games that are older than the average Internet user and possibly older than most of the general population. These are games that are so old that everyone has seen them and heard of them, and they have been recreated thousands upon thousands of times, as arcades, as video games on console, as in-browser flash games, and as buyable remakes and upgrades on services like Steam. You know that the overall plan of a game got something right when it keeps on being made and remade time and time again. So let’s dive into four of the classic ancient games that you have probably seen and maybe even played, despite not knowing their names!

Space Invaders. Space Invaders is one of the ur-games, one of the very oldest of the ancient Atari games that your grandfather probably noticed while watching kids play an arcade in a laundromat in the 1970s. Space Invaders is one of those games that everyone has seen, even if they haven’t played it. It also has been used as an intro game for some titles. The original Tekken for the PlayStation back in the 1990s had an opening screen that allowed the player to play a Space Invaders clone called Galaga while the main Tekken game loaded. While Galaga is different from Space Invaders in some ways, with better graphics, it is very clearly modeled on the latter.

Centipede. Centipede is a game very similar to Space Invaders, with a twist. Instead of being attacked by rows upon rows of space ships, presumably piloted by aliens, you are instead set upon by a giant alien centipede, which appears as a row of small dots. Moving your tiny ship left and right, your job is to shoot beams of light at the centipede until you’ve destroyed it. Segments of its body can be destroyed one at a time. You must destroy the entire centipede to pass the level. People to this day can still be spotted wearing Centipede t shirts, and the game occasionally occurs as an in-browser game, so you know it has staying power.

Pong. Now I just know that you know this one. Unless you’ve been frozen in some insensate stasis for the past century, like some weird mammoth in ice or something, then you know Pong. Everyone knows pong. Slapping a ball back and forth between two paddles might seem boring, but the sheer novelty of controlling something on a screen using physical knobs and buttons was enough to captivate an audience when Pong was released. More to the point, there are a gajillion different remakes of Pong, so many that you’ve surely seen more than one. There are remakes where the paddles can be upgraded, where you can play against a computer, with multiple balls, with a ball that speeds up when you hit it… All sorts of things!

Breakout. Breakout is this game where you control a single paddle at the bottom of the screen, and there are lots of bricks. The ball bounces back and forth between the bricks at the top of the screen and your paddle. The goal is to break the bricks with the ball. The real genius of breakout is not so much the original game, as fun as it is, but the concept. Because of its simplicity, the concept can easily be extended. Looking at Breakout, even a person who doesn’t design games easily has a million different ideas about things that could be added to the game. This had lead to the creation of dozens of new spinoffs.

If you even dare call yourself any kind of gamer, and you’re older than ten, then you know about the Legend of Zelda. For many years, The Legend of Zelda was emblematic of Nintendo the way Mario was. That’s one of the things that made Nintendo great: it didn’t just have one flagship character. Between Mario, Link, Pikachu, Donkey Kong, and others, Nintendo provided a whole host of memorable characters, any one of whom could have carried a gaming company on their own. And back in the late 90s, when the Nintendo 64 was the hot new thing, there was a single Zelda game that stood head and shoulders above the rest: Ocarina of Time. And there are some little-known facts about it still, after all these years. You might hear some of these if you strike up a conversation with a guy in a Legend of Zelda t shirt.

A lot of people don’t know this, but The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was originally going to be a very similar game to Mario 64. The idea was the Ganon’s Castle would be like Peach’s Castle. In Mario 64, Mario moved between different worlds by jumping into paintings, each of which contained its own miniature game world. This idea was also going to be used in Ocarina of Time, but was eventually scrapped in favor of a more open world. Interestingly, the Phantom Ganon boss in the Forest Temple, who goes in and out of paintings, is a remnant of this older approach.

Another easter egg, well known among die hard fans, is the Nintendo characters in the castle. When you first go to see Princess Zelda, you will notice that there are windows on the side of the courtyard where Zelda is peeking in to look at Ganondorf and the King. If you go to those windows and use the C-up button to look closely, you’ll be able to look through them. On the other side are paintings of Nintendo characters like Mario and Yoshi! This is a hidden easter egg that a lot of us learned from gaming strategy guides back when the game first came out.

You can fight giant stalchildren if you want. If you played Ocarina of Time as a kid, you probably remember the stalchidlren, the little skeletons that came up out of the ground if you were caught outside at night. Well, there is a way to summon a giant stalchild to fight. You can do this by killing many stalchildren in rapid succession. If you do it right, and believe me you have to do this fast for it to work, then a single giant stalchild will rise from the ground! This stalchild is three times the size of an ordinary stalchild and will give you a lot of rupees when it dies. Another combat-based factoid is the ability to paralyze redeads with the Sun’s Song. Playing the Sun’s Song around a redead will paralyze it, allowing you to escape.

What Does Frankenstein Represent?

Frankenstein is a famous novel, but why? There were plenty of Gothic horror stories in the 19th century. Among them is the very famous Dracula. So why is it that Frankenstein, of all the various ghouls, goblins, and monsters of the 1800s, would be so famous? The green-skinned monstrosity has been the basis for dozens upon dozens of characters. There have been no end of spinoffs, parodies, representations, re-representations, and fanart of Frankenstein. So what gives? How come he’s such a big deal? What makes this monster such a monster among monsters? There’s got to be a reason of some kind, right?

To understand what made it such a big-time novel, and why so many people still wear Frankenstein t shirts more than a hundred years post-publication, you have to get into the historical context. Yes, Frankenstein is a big scary green monster and has bolts in his neck. Everybody knows that. But is there more to him than that? Indeed there is. Frankenstein is not just a beast or a monster made from technology. On some level, Frankenstein is technology. To put a finer point on it, Frankenstein is what we’re afraid of when we’re afraid of technology. He’s the ghost in the machine.

In the 19th century, technology was advancing rapidly enough that people were beginning to notice it in their own lifetimes. In prior centuries, technology advanced so slowly that people didn’t notice. Yes, things got more advanced, but it took centuries for such things to take place. At most, a person might see one or two technological jumps in their lifetime. The 1800s were the first time in history when technology began to advance fast enough for people to notice in their own lives. “Hey, this isn’t even the world I grew up in, because of all the new gizmos” was something that people began to say in the 1800s.

And that brought fear with it. Technology is scary because it makes us more powerful, but it also raises serious questions about what we’re gonna do with that power. Heinous weapons of war, such as poisonous gas and machine guns, were first conceived of in the 19th and 20th centuries. Those weapons came from technological progress. So it wasn’t all sweetness and light. It turned out that technology could be very frightening, because it could create terrible weapons. It could make machines that made people obsolete, such as textile machines that put thousands of people out of work. It could poison rivers and pollute the air. It can, in short, create monsters.

If technology “creates monsters”, then what’s a good metaphor for that? Well, a literal monster! Frankenstein is exactly the kind of horrible creature whose possible existence first dawned on us in the 19th century. Later on there would be stories of malevolent AIs, mutants, zombies, and other scientific monstrosities. But in the 1800s, we had Frankenstein. There were a few other examples of this in early sci-fi, such as the short story The Island Of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells. In The Island Of Dr. Moreau, an evil scientist creates human/animal hybrids through vivisection. This is a similar concept to Frankenstein. This was the century where we first became aware of the horrors that could come from technology.

Michael Crichton’s Best Book?

So if you haven’t lived under a rock for the past thirty years, you know about Jurassic Park, and you’ve seen every kind of Jurassic Park merchandise: Jurassic Park mugs, Jurassic Park t shirts, Jurassic Park posters, Jurassic Park hats. And if you have a modicum of pop culture lore, you might even know who wrote the book originally, which is Michael Crichton. Steven Spielberg may have directed the groundbreaking film in the 90s, but Michael Crichton was the writer who conceived of the whole idea in the first place. But are any of his other books better than Jurassic Park?

Michael Crichton, you see, knew a lot about biotech, and a lot of his books revolve around biotechnology. He was fascinated by the idea of it. Many of his books deal with the consequences of abusing biotech. You get the impression, upon reading his work, that he was very much afraid of what the abuses of biotechnology could do, and what the consequences would be. However, his oeuvre extends to more than just biotech. He has one very compelling novel, which I feel to be his best, that doesn’t deal much with biotech at all: Sphere.

The setup of Sphere is very strange. A group of academics is sent down below the ocean to investigate something the military believes to be an alien craft. As it turns out, it’s not an alien craft at all. It is, rather, a human ship that was sent out in the future, passed through a black hole, and then came back to the past and crashed in one of our oceans. When the characters go inside, they realize that this perfectly human craft contains a mysterious object called a “Sphere”. When they enter the Sphere, it gives them the ability to remake reality, past and future.

The plot of the novel is very strange because it’s very ambiguous. What, exactly, is the Sphere? Is it an alien artifact that the ship picked up somewhere? Is it a human invention from the future? The book plays with perspective and the very idea of reality. The most interesting part is the questions it raises. For example, what if the crashed ship really is an alien craft, and it only appears to be a future human craft because the humans who found it cannot perceive it any other way? Is Crichton saying that the idea of aliens, because it is such a remote and strange idea, is just a thing that humans can project ourselves onto?

Sphere is probably Crichton’s best book because it’s the most philosophical one. Where Jurassic Park has philosophical undertones that are never made fully explicit, Sphere asks a variety of novel questions. If you can read Sphere from cover to cover without scratching your head at the end, you didn’t read it very closely. The book is made to confuse you and raise questions without answering any of them. In short, the book is there to make you think.
