Top Gun No Points for Second Place Royal Crewneck Sweatshirt

This No Points for Second Place Royal design comes from Top Gun, the 1986 film that turned naval aviation into a synth-scored recruitment poster and never apologised for it. The school is real. The United States Navy Fighter Weapons School was established at NAS Miramar in 1969 to teach dogfighting after air combat performance dropped off in Vietnam, and the call sign culture and squadron patches in the film come straight from it. Top Gun was released in 1986, directed by Tony Scott and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, and it was the highest-grossing film of that year. It is built almost entirely out of surface: jets, aviators, a synth score and Tom Cruise grinning at people.

The F-14 Tomcat has variable-geometry swing wings, and the VF-1 insignia on the merchandise is a real squadron patch. For the sequel Tom Cruise insisted on real aircraft and in-cockpit photography, and the cast went through a months-long flight training programme to withstand the G-forces.
