Metro-Goldwyn, 1925. Tod Browning directs Lon Chaney as a sideshow ventriloquist who retires from the stage to run a jewel racket with a strongman and a con man, conducting business disguised as a sweet old woman in a pet shop. It made real money and made the Browning and Chaney partnership, which ran to eight more films and led directly to Dracula and Freaks.
Chaney remade it as a talkie in 1930, his only sound film, and had to sign a sworn affidavit for MGM confirming that all five voices in it were genuinely his: the old woman, the ventriloquist, the dummy, the parrot and himself. He died of a throat haemorrhage weeks after it opened, aged forty seven.
