Universal, 1925, and one of the most expensive films the studio had attempted. Lon Chaney designed and applied his own makeup and kept the method secret even from the crew, using wire, paint and a device that pulled his nostrils up. Publicity forbade showing the face before release, and contemporary accounts have audiences screaming and fainting at the unmasking.

The production was a mess behind the camera. It was previewed, judged a failure, largely reshot with a different director, previewed again, and cut again, which is why several different versions exist. The Bal Masque sequence was shot in two strip Technicolor and still survives in colour. Universal built the opera house set on Stage 28 with a steel and concrete frame because it had to hold the chandelier, and it stood for nearly ninety years.
