Metro-Goldwyn, 1925. Roland West adapts Crane Wilbur's stage hit with Lon Chaney as a sanatorium doctor whose interest in his patients runs well past the medical. West was a director who cared more about shadows and staircases than performances, and the film is essentially a haunted house picture assembled two years before The Cat and the Canary made that a genre.
Chaney was on loan and clearly enjoying himself, playing the whole thing broad. Reviewers at the time were lukewarm and thought the comedy undercut the horror, a complaint that has aged badly given how many films have since made a living doing exactly that. The poster keeps him in the mirror behind the couple rather than front and centre, which is a smarter piece of design than the film strictly earned.
