Germany, 1925. G. W. Pabst films Vienna during the hyperinflation, a street where everything including people is for sale. Released at home as Die freudlose Gasse, and shot almost entirely on studio sets so Pabst could control the light, which is why the alley looks less like a location than a state of mind.

Asta Nielsen takes top billing and Greta Garbo is second, which tells you exactly where her career stood before Hollywood came for her the following year. Censors across Europe cut it heavily, and for decades the film circulated only in mutilated prints; a full restoration took material from half a dozen archives. The poster is signed by Boris Bilinsky, a Russian emigre who designed some of the finest sheets of the period in Berlin and Paris.
