Description
This Smiling Jim design comes from Taxi, the sitcom that put a handful of people who wanted to be doing anything else in the same garage five nights a week. Everyone at the Sunshine Cab Company is driving a cab as a temporary measure. Elaine works in an art gallery, Bobby is an actor, Tony is a boxer, Jim is Jim. Only Alex Rieger, played by Judd Hirsch, admits he is a cab driver, and the show treats that honesty as the closest thing it has to a moral centre. Danny DeVito plays the dispatcher Louie De Palma from inside a metal cage, insulting everyone who walks past. He is one of the great American sitcom villains, and the series never softens him into a nice man who is secretly kind.
Andy Kaufman built Latka from his Foreign Man stand-up character, and his deal with the show reportedly also obliged the producers to book his lounge-singer alter ego Tony Clifton. The theme, Angela, is by Bob James, and it is a melancholy instrumental for a comedy, which tells you exactly what kind of show it is.
