Outwit, Outplay, Outlast has been the motto from the beginning, and it is unusual among television taglines in that it actually describes the mechanics of the game rather than selling a mood. Survivor premiered on CBS in May 2000, adapted from the Swedish format Expedition Robinson, and its first season finale drew more than fifty million viewers in the United States. Very little on television has managed that since.
The format was adapted from Expedition Robinson, a Swedish series that had already been running for several years before CBS picked it up.
