This White Rock Research Station design comes from Stargate SG-1, the series that took a single 1994 film and turned it into ten seasons of stepping through a ring into somewhere else. The premise is beautifully simple. An ancient ring buried in Egypt connects to a network of other rings across the galaxy, and a small military team walks through it to see what is on the other side. What is on the other side is usually a problem. It spun off Atlantis and Universe and a pair of direct-to-video films, and the fandom that grew around it was organised and loud enough to keep the franchise alive well past the point most networks would have stopped.

Richard Dean Anderson had already been MacGyver, and he took the part on the condition that the character be allowed to be funny, which is why the tone is so much lighter than the film.
