Sealab 2021 Fignuts! T-Shirt

This Fignuts! design comes from Sealab 2021, the Adult Swim series built by taking a forgotten 1972 undersea cartoon and dubbing complete nonsense over the top of it. Sealab 2021 was assembled from the corpse of Sealab 2020, an earnest 1972 Hanna-Barbera series about scientists living in an undersea research station. Adam Reed and Matt Thompson took the existing animation, cut it up, and recorded entirely new dialogue over it. The visual style is pure seventies Hanna-Barbera, flat and bright and slightly stiff, which is exactly what makes the designs work as prints. They look like a sincere educational cartoon until you read what is written on them.

Fignuts is not a real word. It is the sort of thing Captain Murphy shouts, and it ended up on merchandise because that is what people quoted. It was part of the original Adult Swim launch block in 2000, which means it helped establish the entire late-night animation format that followed. This one is printed on a royal unisex t-shirt in sizes S through 5XL. Sizes run deep, with plus sizes and Tall fits on the core tee.
