This I Pledge Allegiance design comes from School of Rock, the 2003 comedy in which a failed guitarist commits serious identity fraud and accidentally becomes a good teacher. Getting the music cleared was the hard part. Led Zeppelin almost never licenses their recordings, so Linklater and Black filmed a direct appeal in front of a festival crowd of thousands chanting for permission, sent it to the band, and got Immigrant Song. It cost around thirty five million dollars and took over one hundred and thirty million, which made it the most commercially successful film Linklater had directed at that point, sitting oddly in a filmography of talky independent dramas.

Nickelodeon ran a School of Rock television series starting in 2016. The child actors were cast for musical ability and play their instruments live in the film rather than miming to session musicians.
