Hal Roach presents, 1923. Harold Lloyd inches along a ledge above a Los Angeles street while a woman leans over the parapet to watch. The building climb was shot on real rooftops with platforms rigged a floor or two below the frame, high enough that a fall would still have been very bad, and Lloyd refused to let the studio fake it in the way a modern production would.

He did all of it with a hand missing its thumb and forefinger, blown off by a prop bomb he was posing with in 1919, wearing a prosthetic glove that the camera never catches. The film was a substantial hit and the clock face image became the single most reproduced still in silent comedy. This sheet shows the ledge rather than the clock, printed by Morgan Litho and billed as a Pathecomedy.
