United Artists, 1925. Clarence Brown directs Rudolph Valentino as a Cossack lieutenant turned masked outlaw, loosely lifted from Pushkin's Dubrovsky. Brown was a former engineer and shot one of the film's most copied moments as a single long tracking shot down a banquet table, which took a purpose built rig and a great deal of patience.

Valentino had walked out on Paramount over money and creative control and this was part of his comeback under a new contract. It was his penultimate film. He died in August 1926 of peritonitis following surgery, aged thirty one, and the crowds outside the New York funeral home were large enough to riot. The poster simply puts him in the fur hat and lets that do the selling, which was accurate marketing.
