This Rick and Horse Kiss design comes from Rick and Morty, the Adult Swim series that grew out of a crude Back to the Future parody and became one of the most quoted cartoons on television. The premise started as a short called The Real Animated Adventures of Doc and Mharti, a deliberately crass Back to the Future parody Roiland made for Channel 101, the short film festival Harmon ran. Adult Swim asked for a series, and the parody grew a nervous system.

Adult Swim ordered seventy episodes at once in 2018, an unusually long commitment for an animated series and a reasonable measure of how valuable the show had become.
