Julien Duvivier's silent adaptation of Jules Renard, billed on the poster as a comedie dramatique en cinq parties. Poil de Carotte, carrot top, is the red haired boy nobody in his own family can quite bring themselves to love. Renard wrote it out of his own childhood and his mother's response was reportedly to stop speaking to him, which explains a good deal about the tone.

Duvivier thought enough of the material to film it twice, remaking it with sound in 1932 with Harry Baur, and it is the sound version that got the acclaim. The silent one is the harder, bleaker picture. The poster is almost entirely black with the title in pale yellow and one small lit figure at a desk: very little happening, all of it deliberate.
