This Dog Tag Logo design comes from Platoon, Oliver Stone's 1986 Vietnam film — written out of his own service and built around a squad at war with itself as much as with anyone else. Oliver Stone served in Vietnam with the 25th Infantry Division in 1967 and 1968, and wrote Platoon from that experience. He had been trying to get it made for roughly a decade before anyone would finance it.

The image of Elias with his arms raised is the poster, and it is the moment the film is built around. Willem Dafoe has said the pose was worked out on the day rather than storyboarded.
