1921. D. W. Griffith adapts the old stage warhorse Les Deux Orphelines: two sisters separated in Paris on the eve of the Revolution, one of them blind. Griffith built several blocks of period Paris on Long Island, hired thousands of extras, and spent enough that the film had to be a considerable hit simply to break even. It was not, and the losses helped push him out of the independent production he had fought for.
Lillian and Dorothy Gish play the sisters, the last film the two of them made together. Lillian later said the guillotine sequence was shot with a real blade rigged to stop, which she did not enjoy. The poster leaves the melodrama alone entirely and simply puts them on a cobbled street in the afternoon light.
