Bantsuma Productions, 1925. Tsumasaburo Bando plays an honest young swordsman whose refusal to bend gets him thrown out of respectable society and turned into exactly the outlaw everyone had already decided he was. It is furious about class and hypocrisy in a way period drama was not supposed to be, and the censors made the production retitle it from Buraikan, meaning ruffian, to Orochi, meaning serpent.

The film is remembered for its closing duel, one man against a slowly increasing crowd, run at a length and a level of exhaustion that had not been filmed before and which set the template for chanbara swordplay for decades. Bando had left the big studios to produce his own work, and this is the film that proved he was right to.
