Description
This Slow Talker design comes from The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, the 2002 middle chapter that has no beginning and no ending and is somehow the best paced of the three. The centrepiece is Helm's Deep, a siege that runs for the better part of forty minutes. It took something close to four months of night shoots to film, in rain machines, and most of the crew remember it as the hardest thing on the entire production. Gollum is the other reason this film matters. Andy Serkis was originally hired to provide a voice, then performed the part on set opposite the other actors, and the animators built the character on top of his performance. That is the moment motion capture stopped being a technical trick and started being acting.
The Helm's Deep siege took months of night shooting in artificial rain and runs close to forty minutes on screen. Andy Serkis was hired only to voice Gollum, then performed the role on set, and the animation was built on his performance.
