1902. Georges Melies sends a capsule full of astronomers to the moon, puts it straight in the moon's eye, and cinema has been chasing that image ever since. He wrote it, designed it, built the sets, played the lead and hand cranked the camera, shooting in his glass roofed studio at Montreuil using theatrical stage machinery: trapdoors, pulleys and painted flats.

It was enormously popular and Melies saw almost none of it. American distributors, Edison's people among them, duplicated the negative and sold prints across the United States without paying him. He went bankrupt, and in 1923 sold his surviving negatives to be melted down for celluloid. He was found years later running a toy and sweet stall at the Montparnasse railway station. This is the exhibition sheet, promising every evening at eight and a matinee on Sundays.
