Mappemonde Film, 1925. Rene Clair was in his twenties and already more interested in what the camera could fake than in what it could record. A man's spirit steps out of his body and wanders Paris while the body stays put, which Clair achieved with double exposure, reversed film and stop tricks inherited straight from Melies.
Clair had made the surrealist short Entr'acte the year before, and this was his attempt at the same anarchy on a commercial feature. It did not find much of an audience, and Clair himself was dismissive of his silent work in later years, which has not stopped the poster outliving most of the films that beat it at the box office.
