Warner Bros, 1925. Ernst Lubitsch films Oscar Wilde and then does the one thing nobody expects: he throws out the epigrams. Not a single one of Wilde's famous lines appears on a title card. The entire drawing room comedy is carried on glances, doors, and the movement of a fan, and it is routinely taught as the clearest surviving demonstration of what people meant by the Lubitsch touch.

Ronald Colman was borrowed from Samuel Goldwyn for it, as the poster is careful to say. Critics admired it and audiences were less sure, which was a recurring problem for Lubitsch's silent period. The race track sequence, where the whole plot advances through nothing but people looking at each other through opera glasses, is the bit film students still get shown.
