Tootsie Pop

Tootsie Pops arrived in 1931 — a hard candy lollipop wrapped around a Tootsie Roll centre. What made them famous came later: the 1970 television advert in which a boy asks a cow, a fox and Mr. Turtle how many licks it takes to reach the centre, and is sent on to Mr. Owl. Mr. Turtle admits he has always been a biter. Mr. Owl bites through after three and the question goes unanswered, which is why it has stayed in circulation for fifty years.

Universities have since run licking machines at the problem and come back with counts in the hundreds. The wrapper with the star-shooting figure carries its own piece of folklore.
