In a span of 50 years, over thirteen Star Trek films have been produced in total. The first Star Trek movie franchise was conceptualized by Star Trek inventor Gene Roddenberry in 1969. He fought to have the franchise continued through a film after the original television series was canceled. The series' syndication success persuaded the studio to start production on a feature film in 1975. Its popularity skyrocketed, especially among teenagers and young adults. Today, Star Trek is one of the most well-known fictional inventions in human history, second only to the Star Wars franchise in terms of global fame.

In Producing Star Trek, Roddenberry was inspired by C. S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower series of novels, Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels, and television westerns like Wagon Train. Six new tv series were finally produced: Star Trek: The Next Generation follows the crew of a brand new starship Enterprise a century after the original show; Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager are put contemporaneously with the Next Generation, also Enterprise, set before the first series from the early days of human interstellar travel. The most recent Star Trek television show, Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard, flow exclusively on digital platforms. The experiences of this Next Generation team continued in four extra feature films. In 2009, the film franchise failed a reboot called the Kelvin Timeline. Three movies were created in this alternative universe. Two added television show are in development for CBS All Access, Star Trek: Lower Decks, an animated series scheduled to debut at 2020; and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, including the Last crew of the Enterprise Before the original series, tentatively set to debut in 2021
