OK, I finally sold one of these the other day and am therefore inspired to write this.
I haven't done this is a while, but it is always amusing to me to find something cool and see who has named there garage band after it. There is a glam band named Rat Fink out of the Netherlands. As any avid reader of my descriptions knows, as a rule I avoid listening to random bands I find on the internet. There are assorted reasons for this, but I thought in this one case I would actually list them:
1. Glam band
2. Netherlands
3. Headliner at the Headbangers Fest (not to be confused with the Headbangers Ball)
4. For god's sake, look at the photos they post. If those are the good ones, I would hate to see the rejects.
5. My Space, not Facebook
6. The MySpace page is actually for something called MadManBoogie, so I guess they couldn't be bothered to register a new page. Looks like they recycled something.
7. They call themselves Rat Fink, but don't have any mention of the actual Rat Fink or Big Daddy Roth. Sure, they are European, but three minutes research online would have told them they should at least have made some kind of acknowledgement.
8. Netherlands.
Oh, wait. I just found out why they didn't register their name as Rat Fink on MySpace. Apparently there is another crappy garage band named Rat Fink from Manchester, NH. I actually give them props as one guitar player actually used to play with G.G. Allin. However, while his band and his performance was groundbreaking and mind blowing, G.G. Allin and the Jabbers was not known for making great music. While I am more inclined to listen to them, fairs fair and I should probably list the reasons why I won't:
1. They haven't updated their page since 2004.
2. MySpace not Facebook.
3. Same complaint about not talking about Big Daddy Roth.
4. Every photo shows someone playing an instrument who looks half asleep.
5. Life is just too short.
6. Netherlands.
Anyway, I suspect that if I dug deeper into the dregs of the internet I might find a couple more bands with this name. Not terribly original, boys. I did find a Rat Fink Films but don't think I want to link them. I also found some interesting articles on band names. The two I thought funny were the 20 Dumbest Band Names of All Time from Spike and the Top 10 Stupidest Band Names of All Time by Guitar Magazine. The funny part is they both list Limp Bizkit as either #1 or 2. This makes sense if you know how they came up with the name. I do, and like many things in my life regret learning it. Disgusting and really, really stupid.
If you are in the process of polluting the internet, the high school talent show, and the local dive bar by creating a band and making what we shall, for lack of a better term, call music, here is an article on how to come up with a band name. Could come in handy. Of course, for those who are even too lazy to do that I found this (sorta) cool Band Name Maker. I entered my favorite rock genre, punk, and got Orchard Of The Punk Hobo, Seething Punk, Unforgiven Punk, Punk Primate, and the shockingly appropriate Punk Mistake. This thing really works!
